Thinking about getting a new laptop

Hey guys,

Via a program of our university I am able to get a certain laptop 1000.- CHF (~800 Euros) cheaper than its regular price. The device I'm thinking about to buy is the Lenovo W540. I will mostly use it for model calculations, mapping calculations, multivariate statistics and ordination analysis and of course for other personal things (I'm not referring here to watching porn Paris :P ).

Here's the link: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/th ... tech_specs

The version I could buy is the one with components offering the highest performance. Since on the tech specs there are different options of components you can choose from, the device I could buy is equipped with the most expensive components listed there.

What do you think about it?

Cheers,

Gig

lenovo is just masterrace concerning support and office options besides that the components you can choose here are just too good to be true, i doubt you will be able to find sth better for you field of work since you get one of the best cpus combined with nvidia quadro power ( power gpus for rendering ) and 16gb ram, thats already ultra awesome for a laptop but the screen is killing me now (15.5" 3K IPS (2880 x 1620) (300 NITS)) ... i didnt even know lenovo got that!

tl;dr: SHUT UP AND GIEF THEM MONEY ASAP!

edit: this is truely a mobile workstation but with only 9 cells and this performance you might suffer a short usage without using the plug (~less than 4 hours under full load conditions)

if you really use the notebook as a notebook as in taking it to different places within and outside your home then go for it. looks incredible

a lot of my friends are buying notebooks just for them being stuck to a desk somewhere in their homes -> why not pay half the price and go for a desktop pc then?

I'm working at many different places as I'm travelling around quite a bit (I will even be in Germany for some time). The main reason behind it is, that I want to have the needed softwares and the data I use, together on one device without always worrying to transfer my data from my back up sticks to other devices with new environments.

but that also means reking this one device reks errything, so always keep that dropbox updated O:)

Don't worry. I'm storing my data on approx. 5 different devices, my cell phone included. It happened once to me that a small data set got rekt due to a head crash of HD of one of our PC's at the institute. Since then I'm totally paranoid saving my data everywhere possible :P

Another point: Lenovo always had great linux support :nerd:
Most of the things work out of the box and for the rest are lenovo drivers

What kinda concerns me about this laptop is the graphics card. Most of the professional cards (e.g. Quadro) don't work properly in games due to lack of driver support. I don't know how the situation is now (it's been a while when I got the information).
3K resolution on a 15" display is kinda useless in my opinion and it's a huge performance killer when it comes to games.

I'm not planning to use the laptop for gaming anyway, so it's not really important to me.

the difference inbetween quadro and detonator drivers are like 15% nowerdays and you still could use the above retina standards display for work and switch to lower resolution while gaming

Personally, if you don't need the dedicated GPU, and I know everyone will hate me for mentioning it, I'd prefer an Apple product, simply because of the way higher resell value and swag. :tomatard:

take that lenovo, you wont regret it. my girlfriend got a thinkpad and this thing is made for a whole life. take it and put an SSD in it if you can afford. at least a small one to work with.

go for the 16gb ram, 2gb quadro, best cpu, 512 gb ssd and a 1tb hdd baytray ( in exchange for the dvd which noone needs anymore ) .. for the screen you have to decide if you "need" or want more than full hd on <16"

and you will likely need better powercells with 12 packs but these were not on the list but i have one from lenovo so they have to be there :P

Those high DPI screens are awesome, but once you have to use cheap ordinary shit at an office or whatever after getting used to a high DPI screen, you get eye cancer.

Depends on the pad and the drivers. For non-gaming stuff, Apple's trackpad is amazing and more comfortable than a mouse, in my opinion, and definitely a hundred times better than a trackpoint. I guess you could get equally good results on windows depending on the drivers (the drivers Apple has for windows are meh, other notebooks that come with windows per default might do a better job).

Instead going for apple products xen... You can go for windows surface instead, very comfortable, small, powerful and portable computer tablet with touch screen (good for drawing)
Works like a pc, looks like an Ipad, strong as a mac, heck I even played wot on med graphics with stable 40 fps x.x
Very good for work!! I recommend it

This is the large version tho
